A ten year old idea comes true

Marcelo Bendhack
After returning from Germany where I finished my residency and Doctorate with Dr. Rolf Ackerman in Düsseldorf, I brought with me an idea, which at the time seemed very daring but entirely feasible. The objective was to create the conditions and environment to promote a high standard scientific discussion with our colleagues, concerning Uro-oncology. This led to our conceiving and carrying out in 1999 the First International Symposium on Uro-Oncology with the essential assistance of my father Donard Bendhack. Without doubt, it was an important challenge, but also a very gratifying. Already at this first meeting, we were able to produce a high quality scientific program, touching on pertinent subjects that drew the attention of several professionals acting in this area. After this first venture, we receive several requests from European colleagues and other interested professionals who stimulated us to format and produce an event that could continually generate interest by our colleagues. This incentive was essential to make our International Uro-Oncology Symposium a successful reality that mobilizes professionals and has significantly contributed to the dissemination of advances in Uro-oncology. On the other hand, in Germany Professors Rolf Ackermann (Düsseldorf) and Manfred Wirth (Dresden), leaders in the area, who started out in the Urology Department run by Professor Frohmüller (Würzburg), have encouraged their colleagues to come to the events we organized. His vision that the Uro-Oncology Symposium would be the most adequate one to generate technique, idea and new work concept exchanges was clear enough and fundamental in conferring a seriousness and credibility aura it has achieved over the last few year.

A NECESSARY STEP - UROLA® (Associação Latino-Americana de Uro-Oncologia – Latin- American Uro-oncology Association) emerged in view of this process as an irrefutable fact. The creation of an entity that can support our activities became an indispensable step.
As of this, we will tell the UROLA history, how it disseminates knowledge how it attracts new affiliates, and how it publishes high-quality scientific papers fostering highest quality scientific research. UROLA has presented significant evolutions especially as to exchanges between lecturers, professors, young doctors and paramedics. We began to discuss recent knowledge from the U.S. and Europe with our Latin American colleagues, uniting in the common goal of producing science in the field of Uro-oncology, speedily and with quality that was recognized internationally.

THE GRAND MASTERS - UROLA tanks many Uro-Oncology professionals who certainly have contributed to the result we are now seeing. We apologize for not mentioning all of them, who we consider great friends and who definitely have contributed to the association and its event. Due to the impossibility of mentioning all of them we will just mention a few, as follows: Bary Berghmans, Eric Wroclawski, Horst Zincke, José Carlos de Almeida, Kurth Miller, Loic Dabbadie, Lothar Weissbach, Manfred Wirth, Michael Droller, Miguel Costa, Miguel Srougi, Nelson Rodrigues Netto Jr., Per-Anders Abrahamsson, Pierre Teillac, Rolf Ackermann, Thomas Ebert, Sergio Metrebian and Ubirajara Ferreira.
My special thanks to my father and teacher, Donard Bendhack, who taught me the principles of Medicine and Urology. To my international “fathers” Rolf and Manfred, I credit my fundamentals of Uro-Oncology and the stimulation and support that have brought us to the point we have reached. To Drs. Maura Seleme, President of the Brazilian Association of Physiotherapy (Associação Brasileira de Fisioterapia), Evanius Wiermann (Clinical Oncology) and Fábio Faucz (Biology), I thank for their untiring support and dedication to our projects. To my international supporters, Per-Anders in Europe, Michael in the US, José Carlos, Gerardo López Secchi, Miguel, Sérgio and Ubirajara in Latin-America, my thanks, my promise of joint work and great dedication.

INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION –UROLA, founded October 18,2004 , was invited in 2007 by the WUOF (World Federation Of Oncology), the World Federation of Uro-Oncology to present to the council and represent Latin America in the Federation. Professor Laurence Klotz, of Canada, Chairman of the Federation has done great work for this. It is the second international invitation to participate effectively.
The first official invitation from the ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) determined the acceptance by this association and the official inclusion in its worldwide available meetings data base. These facts certainly represent the greatest source of pride to the UROLA members and their board.

THE SYMPOSIUM THAT BECOMES A CONGRESS - Parallel our biannual Congress is the moment to review issues, reencounter friends and to seek innovation of the exchange programs. Our greatest legacy will be the International Symposium, the courses and the production of studies and publications such as this.
The 2008 congress was granted by our Board in October 2006 (including the signing of contracts). Therefore, the invitations from some Associations and Societies for joint production could unfortunately not be accommodated. UROLA in turn is very honored by this. It is open to joint participation with other associations, in their future meetings and informs that it has retributed with the same possibility – in a diplomatic way – to all invitations. The 2010 and 2012 events are already being organized.

THE GOOD RELATIONSHIP - UROLA is extremely careful as to its relationships with similar societies. Therefore, the connections to the Uro-Oncology societies (WUOF, American Society of Urologic Oncology, and Mexican Society of Oncologic Urology) must have priority: it is the first link to be built. Its relationship to the Urology Societies, especially the Brazilian one (SBU), the Uruguayan, Argentinean (Society and Federation), and others like CAU (American Confederation), SIU, AUA, and EAU are fundamental. We will also try to establish contact with other Latin-American Urology associations and I must mention specially the Chilean and Mexican ones (Association and College). The relationships with the Clinical Oncology, Radiotherapy, Pathology, Physiotherapy and Nursing Societies are also a primary goal of our association.
